WHAT IS INDIA'S KUMBH MELA?
India's Kumbh Mela focused on the work of Greg Davis, National Geographic Creative photographer. The Kumbh Mela is a religious pilgrimage of Hindu believers who journey to bathe at a sacred river, with the belief that their act of faith will end the cycle of reincarnation and allow them to go to heaven when they pass away.
In 2013, Davis journeyed to Allahabad with a friend and filmmaker, Travis Tank, and shot still photos and video footage of the Kumbh Mela festival at Allahabad. Davis' journey allowed him to chronicle the raw beauty and deeply personal effects of the pilgrimage on the participants, and he encapsulated the journey in his India's Kumbh Mela exhibit of 24 photos and the award-winning documentary Cloth Paper Dreams.
